In the first floor of an old, abandoned factory in the West Side of Syracuse, burns the furnace of John Turex. As the cold winter air blows through the cracked doors and windows, the furnace generates enough heat that Turex has to stop and wipe his sweat away.
Turex founded Borough Furnace in 2011, where he has mastered the process of creating cast iron kitchenware. Turex single-handedly runs the furnace while his girlfriend Liz Seru, assists with finishing the pieces and operating the business.
The Borough Furnace uses Waste Vegetable Oil in an effort to eliminate emergency consumption and waste. Turex creates his own molds, melts the iron and creates the pieces all in the workshop, and by hand.
